Exit 54 Iowa
Would you like to behold a little bit of the old country? You should take exit 54 and go 7 miles north, and you'll be in the heart of the largest Danish settlement in America. Shop in the stores, enjoy authentic Danish food, and visit the Danish Windmill. Built in Norre Snede, Denmark, in 1848, this working windmill (flour is ground on the premises) was dismantled and shipped to Elk Horn where it was reassembled. The site also includes a millhouse (now serving as a museum), gift shop and Iowa Welcome Center.
Danish Immigrant Museum - Establishes in 1983 as a non-profit corporation, opened its first modern structure in June on 1994. The building is reminiscent of Danish half-timbered architecture. The museum is dedicated to telling the story of the Danish American experience from coast to coast. Prominently located in the Museum building "The Danish Immigrant Wall of Honor" displays the names of thousands of Danish immigrants. The names represent the Danes, from the mid-1800's to the present, who left their homeland for a new life in America. Artifacts and traditions are collected, preserved, studied and interpreted in order to preserve this rich heritage. On your stroll through the museum's lovely grounds be sure to stop at the Bedstemor's House (Danish Grandmother's House), completely furnished in the period between 1910 and 1920 when young Danish American families lived there. Also, visit the Morning Star Chapel. This tiny church is only 8' x 12' with a 16' bell tower. It has 4 tiny pews, each pew seats one person. Charles Walensky of Waterloo, built it in 1951 when he was 83 years old for his family's use. Over 100 weddings and many baptisms have been performed in the chapel.
Come celebrate Danish traditions with us...
