LEXINGTON
RECREATION - With over 5,000 acres of water on which to fish, ski, or boat and a generous mix of valley and hill country for hunting, Dawson County offers many opportunities for families and individuals who like to spend time outdoors.
Johnson Lake - Offers something for everyone, with clean, spacious, tree-shaded, full-service campgrounds that will accommodate many visitors without anyone feeling cramped for room. Visitors can layout on the beach, swim, water-ski, cruise, sail, powerboat, fish or just enjoy the beautiful view.
Lexington Family Aquatic Center - Features a 13 foot diving well, 8 swimming lanes, 16 ft. dropslide in the deep pool, 171 ft. waterslide into the recreational pool, 3 waterplay features a wash off area and a wet sand play area. Also available are tennis courts and horseshoe courts, this area is wheelchair accessible.
Information Center - The Lexington Area Chamber of Commerce has conveniently located an Information Center in the AMPRIDE Gas Station 1/4 of a mile north of I-80, Exit 237, on the northbound lane of Highway 283. You will find brochures, maps, information and directions to lakes, museums, antique shops, historic sites, homes and other area attractions.
SIGHTSEEING - Dawson County Historical Museum - This Museum will surprise you with its size and scope and unique items like the
1915 McCabe Baby Biplane, built and flown right here in Lexington. Two important exhibits are
"Big Al," and The Cattlemen's Exhibit. "Big Al" is a 15,000-year-old Colombian Mammoth discovered here in 1993, and is important because of the strong evidence of human association with the site. Cattle are the focus of the other exhibit, with much information about this important area industry. Dawson County has over 500,000 head of cattle on feed and the most modern beef-packing plant in the world.
Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles - In 1986, armed only with a determination to preserve historic military vehicles, four Lexington men formed the Heartland Museum. This is a living museum, with some of the vehicles ready to roll at a moment's notice. Not only are there restored jeeps, trucks, ambulances and half-tracks, but singular vehicles like the Downed Airman retriever, which is one of a handful existing in the entire world today.
